We will pay special attention to the way different Buddhist texts respond to particular historical contexts and religious goals, and the way Buddhism is adapted to new locations as it spreads from South to Central and East Asia, and even to the modern West.

Students will also have an opportunity to learn about the many Buddhist communities of the Puget Sound region. Course Format This class will be delivered synchronously, that is, live, and in person every Monday and Wednesday from pm.

In order to accommodate any unexpected obstacles in the first two weeks of class, I plan to record my live presentations in class and make them available online. No students will be shown in the recording. If you have to miss a class, make sure to complete the reading and ask a classmate about what was covered. Please do let me know if you anticipate regular challenges to joining the class live.

Each class may include a combination of lectures, small group discussions, full class discussions, and student presentations. In-class discussions will be based primarily on course readings, which students are expected to complete prior to the class in which they are discussed. A large part of our learning process is hearing about how each of us reads, interprets, and responds to the texts differently.

If live participation is not possible at times, students can contribute 1 page short responses each week that they are not able to participate live. These should discuss at least two course readings from the week. Some texts will have more than one discussion leader. If a student cannot participate live, they can send questions and comments in advance of the class for which they were assigned to lead discussion.

Throughout the quarter, each student is expected to post at least five times, with at least three coming prior to the end of week 5.

Considered responses to other posts count. There is no fixed length; from a few sentences to a paragraph or so is fine. We may review some of the comments in class as time allows. These will be pulled directly from readings and are all open book. The lowest grade will be dropped, leaving 5 quiz scores to be included in the final grade. The midterms may consist of multiple choice, short answer, true and false, or short essay questions. I will make study guides available in advance of both midterms.

There are two options. For example, you might see a Buddhist temple in a video game, or an idea in a movie or TV show that reminds you of a Buddhist concept studied in class.

Other examples might be an image on a billboard, a lyric in a song, or a t-shirt design. Social media moments like tweets or Instagram stories only count if they had enough engagement to be considered publicly influential. You will provide the reference a pasted image, link to a song with copied lyrics, etc. In practice, this year it might either mean joining a service remotely online or visiting a community in person.

I will provide a list of local Buddhist communities that have been opened up to class visitors. Ideally, students will choose a site in the Puget Sound region to visit, but if you have an opportunity to visit one from out of the area that is also fine.

I will provide a separate set of instructions for this assignment. Even if you choose the Reference Notebook option, I highly encourage you to at least visit one local service to experience a living Buddhist tradition. Students routinely tell me that such visits are the most memorable part of their experience in classes like this.

I will maintain grades separately in a spreadsheet and post final grades to Canvas at the end of the quarter.
