I keep getting fucking distracted by this hot scene where the three girlfriends of The Cast from Beat It sit and eat fast food and look all hot and 80s. Cue another music montage with Spader, Downey, Frankie, and another girl, in which Spader drags them to a country club.
Except, apparently Spader forgot to practice and proceeds to attempt to mouth the words. The movie just went from wacky fun teen comedy to serious schmaltzy romance movie with this piano solo song and a lovely shot where Spader and Frankie get to talk about their hopes and dreams. He also has a stubborn streak, so when he finds himself attracted to Frankie, the girlfriend of the leader of a local gang of youthful thugs, he can't stop himself from pushing her for a relationship.
The thug thinks of Frankie as his property and sees the cool, urbane Morgan as dead meat. Is this a struggle to the death? Did you know Edit. The sweaters folded casually over the shoulders! Kim Richards is somewhat miscast as a "tough" girl but gives a very game performance and looks gorgeous as always. James Spader also gives a sincere performance, which couldn't have been easy with some of these scenes he is forced to serenade Kim Richards on the piano. The best scenes, IMO, are the country club montage Olivia Barash blithely asking the rich girls "You do swallow, right? How do we know this? Because Richards breaks into a perfectly choreographed albeit spontaneous dance number!
