The piece is titled Canon and Gigue in D. But it has become known as just Canon in D. Some musicologists think he may have written it for the wedding of one of his friends! The piece was obscure for some time before that recording. After Paillard's recording, the piece featured in movies, TV, and radio. Since then, it has become associated with weddings and other festive events. The original format is for three violins, and basso continuo which means an improvised part. Today we have many arrangements for both solo instruments and chamber music ensembles.
